On July 4th, one of the most dangerous pieces of legislation in America’s history was signed into law. Besides stripping millions of Americans of healthcare and harming students and public education in countless ways, it transforms Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into the largest law enforcement agency in the US, while opening the doors to tortuous detention centers. This is un-American and inhumane.
Today, we at EQUUS stand with immigrants, no matter their legal status. We recognize that millions of people who migrated to America are caught in a broken immigration system that leaves them vulnerable. They are not “criminals”, they are students, families, and tax-paying hard working individuals. Our Traditional sisters and grandmothers at Tewa Women United posted this statement to which EQUUS aligns.
Please inform yourself about the true story of immigrants by watching this brief 13 minute video by our friend and historian Heather Cox Richardson, so when a member of your family or friend circle starts regurgitating the toxic spin of migrant criminality, you can kindly educate them.
